IS Bank is the largest private bank in Turkey, with the biggest branch and ATM network among private banks. Established in 1924 at the initiative of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, IS Bank was launched with the aim of financing the nation’s industry through the provision of both loans and equity participations. As part of IS Bank’s "Infrastructure Enhancement Project" which was deployed almost two years ago, the bank was looking to move its OLTP data to new systems with very little downtime.

Koray YALDIZ, DBA, IS Bank explained: “We needed to move our current system on Linux to a new system on AIX. Also we wanted to upgrade our Oracle database in addition to leveraging Oracle’s ASM facility instead of OCFS. These three requirements together required lengthy down-time which was unacceptable for a high-level, 24/7 service that IS Bank prides itself in offering its customers.”

To address all three issues, IS Bank had considered a host of different individual solutions which it felt might provide the desired outcome. IS Bank discovered that outside Oracle’s utilities, GoldenGate was the only independent vendor that supported the Oracle ASM capability which quickly drove them to their final decision.
“After the proof of concept in December 2007, however, we saw that the GoldenGate® product performed well beyond our expectations and wholly satisfied our needs. Compared with alternative migration methods, GoldenGate was the only one that enabled minimal down-time.”

Demonstrating their successful partnership, the GoldenGate and ITD teams worked closely together with IS Bank to test, install and run the GoldenGate solution for this critical migration project. Once the new system was up and running, IS Bank used GoldenGate Veridata™ to validate that both systems contained the same data before switching over to the new environment. Additionally, IS Bank had the ability to fail-back to the original system for a period of time in the event of any issues because of the GoldenGate solution’s bi-directional capabilities.
